Many of the families that CFACH assists travel to Nairobi from remote areas hundreds of miles away. They arrive at the CFACH office with few or no funds and do not have a place to stay. To help these families, CFACH opened its Family Support Center in April, 2019 to provide the children and their caregivers a safe and secure place to stay while undergoing medical care in Nairobi. Our Center is located in a one-story rental home in South B, Nairobi, only a five minutes’ drive to The Mater Hospital, where many children receive medical care.
The Family Support Center provides accommodation for the patients and caregivers, a kitchen for preparing meals, and a common area for children and families to gather together, much like a Ronald McDonald House in the U.S. Since CFACH’s patients come from desperately poor families, poor diet and a harsh environment at home often threaten their recovery, especially when the children are weak from surgery. The care and comfort of the family support center ensures they recuperate in hospitable conditions and are within access to a hospital in case of emergency.
